The proven and popular Metal Shark 27 Defiant, choice of the US Navy as well as law enforcement and port security forces from coast to coast, has been redesigned to offer the same industry-leading features as its larger Defiant-class siblings. Thanks to its 8′ 6″ beam the 27 Defiant is easily trailerable. It is an extremely durable and highly versatile craft that, like all Metal Sharks, may be configured and customized to suit a wide range of mission profiles. Featuring a deep vee hull and power options up to 500 HP, the 27 Defiant will slice through the waves, its wide reverse chines provide stability while at rest, and its crew-friendly layout allow for comfortable, efficient, and safe operation in a range of environments.

Hull Design

The 27 Defiant features all-aluminum construction, with its precision-welded hull, deck, and pilothouse composed entirely of premium-grade 5086 aluminum alloy. An 8’6” beam makes this compact vessel ideal for over-the-road transport, however, thanks to wide reversed chines and the ample heft of its stout hull, the 27 Defiant is stable while underway or at rest. Twin outboard engines require minimum maintenance and deliver quick acceleration, nimble handling, and a soft smooth ride.

Deck Layout

The 27 Defiant boasts a clutter-free deck arrangement that allows for easy, surefooted passage from bow to stern, with wide-open workspaces and non-skid walkways throughout. Low-level LED pathway illumination has been provided for night missions, and grab rails are ideally placed and always within easy reach. A durable, urethane-sheathed, closed-cell foam collar provides impact resistance during boarding or alongside maneuvers, and integrated dive reliefs facilitate water access and recovery. The 27 Defiant may be equipped with an open-bow configuration with the bow cockpit easily accessed through a large sliding companionway door in the pilothouse, while a closed-bow version with v-berth is also available.

Pilothouse Details

The most immediately apparent advancement in Metal Shark’s Defiant pilothouse design is the use of Pillarless Glass to substantially enhance visibility. The result is a near elimination of the dangerous blind spots that are an unfortunate drawback of conventional pilothouse vessels. Further, the 27 Defiant’s quickly opening side and aft pilothouse doors offer added flexibility and greatly facilitate communication when docking or maneuvering alongside another vessel. Multiple seat options and seating arrangements are available, including shock-mitigating military seats, to meet the needs and requirements of specific customers.

Custom-Configurable

The 27 Defiant is available in two configurations. In the Bow Cockpit model, (shown) a forward door provides through-cabin access to the open foredeck, while the Cuddy Cabin model features a roomy forward cabin that also serves as a large dry storage compartment. Both configurations come standard with a full-width main pilothouse cabin that may be fitted with optional climate control and shock mitigating seating for true, all-weather comfort. The vessel shown here has been configured for port security and law enforcement patrol, and has been equipped with forward pusher knees and a 500 lb. capacity davit in the aft cockpit. Low-level cockpit LED lighting and available thermal-imaging (FLIR) system provide safety during night missions, while the removable engine protection bar keeps the 27 Defiant’s twin outboards safe and secure while operating in close quarters.

Choice of the United States Navy

The Metal Shark 27 Defiant currently serves as the US Navy Force Protection Boat – Small. In FPB-S configuration, the 27 Defiant features a more conventional windshield arrangement, but offers the advantage of a convertible pilothouse that folds down and stows away for transport.
